There is something comforting about the steady stream of banter that flows between two friends who have known each other for decades. Like a foot finding its way into a well broken in slipper, the fit is effortless. Apart they exist, but together they make sense.

Michael Dumontier and Neil Farber have collaborated for nearly thirty years. Founding members of the influential Winnipeg art collective The Royal Art Lodge (1996-2008), they have made countless prodding one-liner paintings that deliver a poesis that is both easily approachable and layered. Developing several simultaneous bodies of work—paintings of flower, animals with sharpies, and a library series for example—they give life to a visual, linguistic, and conceptual vocabulary that is properly theirs.

Each painting in Dumontier and Farber’s universe, while distinct, bears the unmistakable trace of their signature wit. “US, BUT YOUNGER.” written on a black compact cassette against a red backdrop: possibly a reminder of a time past, a nostalgic ha-ha, but also a sincere acknowledgement of change, a nod to something that unites us. “I’VE GOT THE FETCH, IF YOU’VE GOT THE STICK” written in white against a green background, the profile of a shaggy blonde dog looking blankly forward: perhaps a call to collaborate and complete each other, an acknowledgement that I’ll bring my “A” game if you bring yours.

Shaping ideas each on their own but then meeting every Wednesday night to lay out the images, select the text, work out the kinks and find the moments that click, Dumontier and Farber are like a well-oiled machine, only less robotic and more funny-lol-sad-sigh. Matching illustrations with writing is a generative process, an infinite source of possibilities. When the right pair is made, it becomes encapsulated in a single moment/painting. While the English language, and each piece’s multiple meanings or double-entendres, are obviously important, it is above all else the ideas that resonate. There is a near physical comedy to the work, a universal language that is more of affect than precisely coded insider humour.

Dumontier and Farber’s matches-made-in-friendship have an unmistakable rhythm to them: a pair, a duo, a one-two-punch. Apart, each image and sentence would elicit a certain response, but together they become something more. In the context of an exhibition, deployed all throughout the gallery space, they tell yet another story.

Il y a quelque chose de réconfortant dans cet échange fluide de propos complices qui coule entre deux ami.e.s de longue date. Tel un pied retrouvant naturellement son chemin vers une pantoufle bien moulée, l’harmonie s’opère sans effort. Séparément, ces êtres existent, mais ensemble, ils prennent tout leur sens.

Michael Dumontier et Neil Farber collaborent depuis près de trente ans. Membres fondateurs du collectif artistique influent The Royal Art Lodge, actif à Winnipeg de 1996 à 2008, ils ont réalisé une multitude de tableaux ponctués de phrases brèves et percutantes, offrant une poétique à la fois accessible et nuancée. Créant divers corpus d’œuvres en parallèle – des peintures de fleurs, des animaux dessinés au feutre Sharpie, ou encore une série de bibliothèques –, ils donnent vie à un vocabulaire visuel, linguistique et conceptuel qui leur est propre.

Chaque tableau de l’univers de Dumontier et Farber, bien que distinct, porte l’empreinte incontestable de leur esprit singulier. « US, BUT YOUNGER » (NOUS, MAIS PLUS JEUNES), inscrit sur une cassette compacte noire sur fond rouge, peut évoquer un temps révolu, un ha ha nostalgique, mais aussi une reconnaissance réelle du changement, un clin d’œil à ce qui nous rassemble. « I’VE GOT THE FETCH, IF YOU’VE GOT THE STICK » (J’AI ENVIE D’ALLER CHERCHER, SI TU AS LE BÂTON) – écrit en blanc sur un fond vert, au-dessus du profil d’un chien blond ébouriffé regardant droit devant lui, l’air vide – semble être une invitation à collaborer et à se compléter, une manière d’admettre que je donnerai le meilleur de moi-même si tu fais de même.

Façonnant des idées chacun de leur côté, puis se retrouvant chaque mercredi soir pour disposer les images, choisir le texte, résoudre les accrocs et saisir les instants où tout s’aligne, Dumontier et Farber fonctionnent comme une machine bien huilée – en moins robotique, mais avec ce mélange de drôlerie-fou rire-tristesse-soupir qui les caractérise. Associer une illustration à un texte relève d’un processus génératif, une source inépuisable de possibles. Lorsqu’un agencement juste émerge, il se cristallise dans un moment/tableau. Si la langue anglaise et les multiples interprétations, ou doubles sens, que cache chaque œuvre jouent évidemment un rôle clé, ce sont avant tout les idées qui résonnent. Il y a dans ce travail une comédie quasi physique, un langage universel qui relève davantage de l’affect que d’un humour d’initié précisément codé.

Les associations nées de l’amitié entre Dumontier et Farber ont un rythme qui ne trompe pas : une paire, un duo, une combinaison qui frappe juste. Prise de manière isolée, chaque image et chaque phrase susciterait une certaine réaction, mais ensemble, elles prennent une tout autre dimension. Dans le contexte d’une exposition, déployées à travers l’espace de la galerie, les œuvres racontent une autre histoire.

Michael Dumontier and Neil Farber are founding members of The Royal Art Lodge, and have continued a collaborative practice since the collective disbanded in 2008. Their work has been exhibited nationally and internationally. They were shortlisted for the Sobey Art Award in 2014. Dumontier and Farber’s work is included in the permanent collections of the National Gallery of Canada, Vancouver Art Gallery and Winnipeg Art Gallery as well as Takashi Murakami (Tokyo, Japan), La Maison Rouge (Paris, France), Centro De Arte Caja de Burgos (Burgos, Spain), Dallas Museum of Art (Dallas, USA).

Didier Morelli is a curator, performance and art historian, cultural critic and visual artist. Previously the associate editor at Espace art actuel, his writing has also been published in numerous national and international academic and non-academic journals, magazines, and newspapers. Morelli will be the curator of the 2026 MANIF, the Quebec City Biennial, which is titled Briser la glace / Splitting Ice. ..

Morelli sera le commissaire de la MANIF D’ART 2026, la Biennale de Québec, intitulée Briser la glace / Splitting Ice.
